Discover the joy of painting – no experience required!

Join us for a relaxing and creative group painting class. A Bob Ross certified instructor will guide you step-by-step through the process of creating your own masterpiece. And we provide everything you need, including an easel, canvas, brushes and paints.

Guided Instruction

Each step is demonstrated, we will cover everything from showing you how to mix colors & load your brush to applying the paint to achieve the desired effect.

Personalized Help

No man or woman is left behind! The instructor will regularly circulate to offer one-on-one assistance, answer your questions and ensure you get the support you need to complete your masterpiece.

Take Home Your Art

You’ll complete your painting during the class and take it home with you to enjoy.

All classes include breaks. For longer classes, there is also a one hour lunch break. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, you’ll have a fun and rewarding experience.

What level of experience is needed for group classes?

No experience necessary! The classes are designed step by step and the instructor will regularly walk around and assist. Everyone’s there to have fun, relax and learn or practice skills.

What ages can attend classes?

Classes are 18+. Ages 10-17 may attend if accompanied by an adult. Please note that oil paints are used in class and odorless mineral sprints. It is recommended that the adult cleans the brushes (when using thinner) for children, if attending.

How much do group classes cost?

Group classes are generally $65-$85 for average 3-5 hours of painting time. This includes all painting materials and the canvas.

What do I need to bring to class?

Required: Please bring a roll of absorbent paper towel. Bounty works best, but note that thin, less absorbent paper towel can make it difficult to dry your brushes fully in between steps. Optional: if needed, bring latex style/disposable gloves if you are sensitive to chemicals or want extra protection for paint on your hands. Shielding lotion is provided in class to make it easier to clean your hands, but gloves work better of course. Eye Glasses or hearing aids: if you need hearing aids, please remember to wear them! If eye glasses help it is a good idea to bring them either to see details up close on your painting, or distance to see details being shown by the instructor at the front of the class. Generally there is a zoomed up view of the instructors painting on a television available.

Do I need to be a member of the Dallas Makerspace to attend class?

The classes are open to the public, no need to be a member. The doors at the Makerspace require a badge for entry. There is a doorbell on the door and someone will let you in if you are not a member with badge access.

Can I sit to paint in the class?

Chairs are provided and you may sit to paint. The easels are adjustable from sitting to standing height. You may also bring a chair cushion if it helps for sitting several hours. The Makerspace is wheelchair accessible as well. If you need any accommodation please do contact me prior to class. I am happy to help if I can to ensure accommodations are provided.

What should I wear to attend class?

Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes you don’t mind getting paint on if it happens. Aprons are provided, however stray paint happens.

What should I do if I struggle to keep up in class?

If you are trying to fix something, you can almost always go back to it later. It’s best to move on with the instructor for the next step. If you are concerned though, simply ask for help. The instructor walks around assisting regularly so it is not common for students to fall far behind.

What should I do at the beginning of class?

Canvas, aprons and shielding lotion are provided at the front of the class. Grab a canvas and apron, then choose an open easel. Note some spots have been set up for left-handed people or reserved for special accommodations. Put your canvas on the easel (if you need help please feel free to ask). Put some shielding lotion on your hands/or gloves. Instructions for putting your paint will be at the easel. The tables are covered with coated paper and we use the table as a pallet. Trays of paint tubes are available in the room. A container of brushes and mediums are all at your easel and you can setup your station as others will be setting up. Relax and get ready to paint!

What do I need to do at the end of class?

Please clean the majority of paint off of all brushes before putting them back into the container. The brushes will be re-cleaned later so do not worry about getting them spotless, but should not have thick paint left in them. You can use wet wipes provided to wipe off brush handles and the pallet knife. You do not need to clean the table, as I will throw the paper away. If time permits group pictures (optional) may be taken at the end of class and if you want a personal picture taken with your painting (and with Bob Ross!) it’s a fun keepsake.

How should I dry my painting?

The painting may take several days to dry to touch and heat or humidity can affect that. Some colors take longer than others to dry. It’s best to dry it flat and away from dust/hair if possible. Oil paintings can take months to cure, but can be framed if desired once dry to the touch. Member at Dallas Makerspace can leave their paintings in the drying racks in the creative arts area. Oil paintings can be added to/touched up after touch dry as well.
